Victoria Road School

The original school opened in 1895 as a boy’s school, the girl’s school being in Hope Street. Later they were combined as an elementary school ,teaching children from 5 – 14. Some students who passed the 11 + test went to the grammar school in Douglas until the opening of Castle Rushen High School in 1948.

Quote from the school log 27th September 1948:

“Miss MacDonald came to collect the Domestic Science utensils for transport to the high School together with the senior text books for all subjects and two balances”

Victoria Road became a primary school and pupils at 11 years moved to the comprehensive school at Castle Rushen.
